Beyond the Superwoman Myth

An Afternoon of Real Conversations on Women's Mental Wellness

On Saturday, April 11th, the Women’s Empowerment Foundation welcomed more than 40 women from across the community for an afternoon unlike any other. Held at the warm and welcoming Veda Indian Cuisine in Scottsdale, the event, “Beyond the Superwoman Myth: Real Conversations on Women’s Mental Wellness,” was a powerful reminder that strength doesn’t mean doing it all alone.

From 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, attendees came together to connect, learn, and prioritize their well-being in a space built on openness and support. The afternoon featuredDr. Padma Aking, M.D., a psychiatrist whose insight and warmth set the tone for honest, meaningful dialogue.

The conversation centered on three themes that resonated deeply with every woman in the room.

First, the Superwoman Myth, the invisible pressure so many women carry as they balance career, family, and personal expectations, was finally named and examined with compassion rather than judgment. Dr. Aking helped attendees recognize the weight they often normalize, and offered a new way of seeing it.

Dr. Aking shared an analogy that stayed with many attendees: just as in-flight announcements instruct passengers to secure their own oxygen masks before assisting others, women must care for themselves first to care well for the people they love. As one attendee reflected afterward, “The takeaway that resonated most with me is that it’s okay to put yourself first, ahead of the endless list of responsibilities and obligations we carry.”

Next, the discussion turned to Resilience in Times of Change, offering practical strategies for maintaining mental wellness through life’s inevitable transitions.

Finally, Breaking the Silence created a safe, supportive space for women to speak openly about mental health, something that is still far too rare.

The event also featured an optional lunch buffet, giving guests the chance to continue their conversations over shared food, laughter, and connection.

The Women’s Empowerment Foundation’s mission – to Network, Inspire, Connect, Mentor, and Empower- was fully alive in that room.

Beyond the Superwoman Myth was more than an event. It was a turning point for many women who left feeling seen, supported, and less alone.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us, and to Dr. Padma Aking for her generosity, expertise, and heart.
